Even though I have often heard of Federico Mondelci, one of the most internationally acclaimed sax performers today, I had never attended one of his concerts until last night. Actuallly, in the early ’90s – when I attended my first year of College in the States – I even attempted playing the alto saxophone which I had bought from a girl who was playing in the College wind band. Unfortunately I never made it to play farther than the worst performance you can possibly think of ‘New York, New York’!
Anyway, going back to last night, I finally attended a performance by Federico Mondelci playing with the ‘Orchestra Filarmonica Gioachino Rossini’, directed by him, at Rossini Theatre in Pesaro. The traditional ‘Christmas Concert’ organized by Banca dell’Adriatico was to me a rare gift.
First of all Mondelci, who teaches at Pesaro Music Conservatory and is the artistic director of Pesaro Concert Body, is an excellent and captivating player. Second, the programme was amusing (music by Astor Piazzolla, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Chick Corea and, in the end, a Beatles suite for saxophone and orchestra arranged by Roberto Granata). I also appreciated the friendly relationship that Federico Mondelci established with the audience from the beginning. Before each musical piece, he turned to the public and made a brief introduction on the composer. A few references to better appreciate and enjoy the performance.
The concert, which hosted a performance by the saxophone orchestra of the Music Conservatory G. Rossini, celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Belgian musical instrument designer and musician, Adolphe Sax, who invented the saxophone among other instruments.
Another excellent music event in town, thanks to Banca dell’Adriatico, which makes Pesaro an increasingly more ‘musical’ town!
